The design was commissioned by a Beijing based businessman with the intention of using it both as business accommodation on his many trips to the city, and a family holiday apartment for trips with his wife and young child. The brief had two central requirements; the design was to be warm and family oriented, a home away from home and it was to incorporate the colours red and orange, both of which have strong Chinese cultural significance.
Sh’Afra Design Collective has produced an apartment that ties the vibrancy and textures of the Johannesburg city-scape with the sophistication of an international lifestyle. The intention was to create a neutral palette of greys, blacks and whites and accent it with bright splashes of colour. Vermillion was used as an accent colour in the lounge symbolising change and spontaneity, while red, a traditional colour was used as an accent colour in the bedroom for good luck.
